Default Double roller timing chain on '85?

Do you need to change the timing cover if you go from a single roller timing chain to a double roller timing chain on a 1985 Corvette?

Thanks.

Inquiring minds want to know. Why are you changing the timing chain?

Popped it I think. Took out a few valves so far. I don't want to get too involved with this but I'm sending the heads and everything to the machine shop to get checked. Forged TRW pistons have small nicks in them. I should have put a double roller in back when I did the cam but I wasn't too aware of what was involved. Thought I had to change a lot of things. By the way it was a cloyes single roller chain for anyone wondering.

Why not just skip out on having a chain alltogether?

Go Gear Drive if you're feeling really worried.

The knock sensors do not like gear drives; that's what everyone has said on here for years. Too much noise. They're not the best anyway, as they can set up bad harmonics, or don't cancel them, within the valve train. Serious racers often use belt drives; expensive but effective. Not necessary on street cars.

A stock chain and gear set is fine for a mild or stock engine. If you add some huge valve spring pressures, its a considerable upgrade to go with a double row chain. You will have to make many more mods also.
Gear drive setups are great. They sound cool for about 2 weeks and then the fake blower sound aint all that fun anymore.

Mine probably broke because of the valve springs that came on my AFR heads. Or because it probably jerked too much every time I stepped on it. When you say that I have to make many more mods, which mods are you referring to? Performance mods, or mods to make the chain fit? Also I looked up the sound of gear drive on youtube and I just feel like it would get annoying after about a day. Plus I don't want people to think I have a supercharger when I dont.

timming gears come straight cut or angle cut.. one is quiet, one sounds like a whine. You may have to buy a cam button with the gears, not sure.

I used a Cloyes 3-3145 when I rebuilt my L98 and it fit under the stock cover perfectly.

The 3-3145 is for factory roller blocks. He has a flat tappet cam.

Will this one work? Only 2 popped up for my search of 1985 Corvette on summit racing. Melling, or sealed power. I had a couple things break from Melling too... but I guess these ones may be the only ones available to me. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mel-3-163s

This is correct. The base circle for the bolts got smaller for the addition of the roller cam retainer plate in 87. The use a different cam gear.

What about the Cloyes 9-1100 that Mr ****** suggested? If you're concerned about fitting with the stock cover, buy a new cover for $20.

Well the problem is with my current cover the back of water pump is touching the cover already. It is a flow Kooler pump.

I believe it will fit because that's what I use. I have a Flow Cooler pump, Miloden cover and Cloyes double roller chain.

What's different about the timing cover that you have compared to stock? Is it thinner or does it protrude out more?
