It is located under the distributor rotor. You have to remove the distributor shaft to replace it. The two wire connector plugs into the ignition module:
When the engine rotates the pickup coil creates pulses that are used by the ignition module to create DRPs (Distributor Reference Pulses). DRPs are used by the ECM for several things. Mostly they are used to determine the spark timing and to synchronize the pulsing of the injectors to the rotation of the engine.
