Heard a lot of clunking and clickin in the rear end today the clicking was in the left rear tire and was thinking the ujoints how hard are they to replace and was going to buy them from autozone just need some installation tips
There a number of threads on changing out u-joints on the half shafts.
I did mine last spring and it wasn't that hard. This is one of the threads I used for reference and it helped a lot: http://www.digitalcorvettes.com/foru...d.php?t=144562
It took me a few hours only because I dropped one bolt and it skidded across the floor and took a while to find. Had that not happened, maybe a couple of hours from start to end. I also made a tool to help reduce the possibility of bending the yoke on the half shafts by reducing the chance of something catching
Just be sure to have the right tools lined up and support the car well while working on it.
Main thing is to make sure you use the special coated U-joints...due to the half shafts and drive shaft are aluminum. The outer circumference of the caps of the coated U-joints will NOT be shiny metal...they will be dull. YES...it makes a difference....unless the numerous half shafts that I have had to throw away and replace due to corrosion of the aluminum due to dissimilar metal contact...and the caps of the new u-joint would wobble when slid in by hand.
Also..do not install U-joints with a grease or Zerk fitting. Solid U-joints is the only way to go.
The procedure in the Digital Corvette post is Waaay to complicated. Unless you plan on replacing the rear bearing hub, DONT TOUCH IT.
1) Loosen all u joint straps and jiggle the half shaft loose from the upper end.
2) Remove the spring attaching bolt by using a floor jack to slightly ease the pressure. When its out, ease the spring down.
3) Remove the very large bolt at the bottom of the hub assembly that holds the bottom dog bone of the suspension. This eliminates having to realign the rear end.
4) Push out on the hub assembly and the half shaft will fall out.
5) Replace the u joints by using the method available to you.
6) Reassemble
7) Drink beer.

Sorry, I thought it was obvious that even though this includes changing the hubs you only use those parts that apply to the u-joints.
About the only variance is you can break the spindle nuts loose while the car is on the ground as it's easier otherwise the pictures and descriptions are good and easy to follow.

Ive done the u joints then done the u joints with the hub. I have found most write ups and FSM procedures, while a good guide line, will get someone new into a huge procedure when there are easier ways. The pics are great in the DigiVette article but the OP needs to search a bit more for other posts and combine the thoughts of them all. Unless he is replacing the hub, lol!
Ok replaced u joints in half shafts cant get to driveshaft yet so am waiting on that one but it is still clicking not so much clunking anymore what could it be, also did the ujoints for an 84 fit your half shafts? Because mine didnt i had to get the u joints for a 1990 zr1 to fit in my half shafts
