Default Air filter housing

I've heard a lot that everyone who owns a c4 should either buy a new unrestrictive housing for the air filter or cut it up themselves. I'm thinking of cutting it myself but was just wondering if anyone had pictures of theirs so I don't completely screw this up. Thanks for any help guys really appreciate it

cut out every other vent in the lid. Sand or grind any rough edges.

Do you really believe GM automotive engineers don't understand
the need for sufficient clean air flow for the Corvette engine, and
would design a restrictive air cleaner package?

I'm sure there are those whose dyno numbers improved after
cutting the air filter (plus adding an airfoil, along with the throttle
body bypass).

I cut all the vents out of mine, then ground them flush with a grinder...I did it because my 383 motor sucks more air then the stock motor did....
Seabright,,,As far as the GM engineers designing the proper air filter housing for our cars , "aren't these the same guys that put the 305 intake on our 350 motors"???.....WW

Buy a used cover plate on the famous auction site we all use. Keep your original one intact and put it in storage. Cut the center out of the replacement cover. Grind down the rough edges and paint it black again. It works great. I did it myself.

Go a step farther and strip the cover and POLISH it !

I did that and it looks Fantastic ! Aluminum was made to be polished.

BUT,
don't bother with ANY of that stuff unless you toss $75 into a real K&N filter. THAT will benefit the engine and it will also save you money. Its the LAST air filter you buy for that car,. I've thrown mine in the washer, hosed it out, used the pressure washer on it and its STILL like new and works like a charm. Lite oil mist and its good for another few months.

Yep... for those that aren't familiar with the 305 problem:

And, maybe we should include the ignition recall.

You are ASSUMING the engineers care a whit about what YOU want as opposed to what the company AND the EPA wants. Sorry, you don't even merit being mentioned. I do what my govt tells me thru my company.

Not to worry. Just lay masking tape around the vent, mark and cut. Finish up with sanding and some black paint. A K&N is a good investment too.

Gordon Killabrew told me that the TB coolant was done because once, during testing, a throttle plate froze up. I did the bypass no only to cool the intake system but mostly so I didn't have to drain coolant every time I pulled the TB and/or intake top.

Similarly Gordon gave me the scoop on the reason for the infamous "frisbee" on the '88-'91 L98s.

Make sure you have a bathing suit on...Because your azz is going to get wet...

I'm not sure cutting the lid is going to make a noticable improvement in a stock engine, but it did make an improvement on my 383 that I could hear and feel..I would still cut it on a stock engine, because it can't hurt to open up the air flow......WW

What was the reason for the Frisbee? Smooth running?

On the dyno, we gained a little more by removing the air filter as opposed to the K&N cone filter. I tried it but couldn't hear or feel any different. Dyno said there was so I'll accept it.

Now I'm curious. What "305 problems" did that article point out that are unique to the 305?

Stock air filter housing in the 'Vette was sufficient for the 405hp ZR-1...so I'm betting that it's probably O.K. for a stock or stockish, any other C4 engine.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll probably do what fourspeedvette said to do and if I don't like how it performs or if it has any problems I'll simply put the stock one back in

Tom, I was referring to the fact that the TPI intake on the L98 engines were originally built for the 305 cube engines , GM decided that it would be sufficent for the 350 engines before production and used it on the L98 engines... We all now know that was a bad call........I don't know what Seabrights 305 article has to do with that issue.....I believe the filter housings on the 90 and up Corvettes were larger..My buddy has a 90 Corvette and his filter housing looks much larger then mine.......WW
