a couple bangs to the dashboard turned it right back on!
I can understand your enthusiastic glee........ but, don't consider banging the dash as a permanent fix. If the dash stays illuminated,
that is great, but if the illumination is sporadic, time to search for
loose connections, broken wires, etc.

Good luck
Oh totally, just a fix for today so I know my gas amount. Ha. I will be sending it in for a refurb.
Just a humble suggestion..... if you don't own an OWNER'S MANUAL,
or FACTORY SERVICE MANUALS (FSM), check eBay for availability.
It is obvious that you have the mechanical/electrical skills to service your vette. Banging on the dash is where most of us started, and some never migrated.

Lol, yeah I got one on the way, picked one up from Ebay. I figured it was a good place to start to just know my current gas. Its being mailed in next week for a formal refurb!
You have to take the cluster out to send it in, why not inspect it before shipping. My 92 would do the same thing; smack the dash and came back on. I found a micro crack in one of the pins on the main cluster to harness connection. I desoldered and resolderd the pins and it now works. GOOD LUCK!
