So, went out today to mess with the car a bit. spent a couple hours on it, still a no start. First I had to checking into the no cranking and as i thought it was a bad starter relay. Lucky for me i had an extra starter laying around. swapped them out and got it to crank but still no fire. Pulled a plug and it was clearly running juuuussst a bit rich. I was getting some popping out of the carb so i figured id check the rest of the ignition. took the distributor cap off and found that the rotor was not bolted down, and the screws were just getting tossed around in there! since i didn't have much to work with i put it back together, then checked the plug wires. One wire was disconnected from the plug and two were crossed. I cant believe this thing ran in the first place. put it all together and got ride of the backfires but still a no start. I guess ill try to source a new cap and rotor tomorrow, along with putting new plugs in. The carb needs some attention as well, but im thinking it did run and it should again before i start messing with it. after i get it running then i can start to figure out my trans problem...
Im starting to think im might be into this thing a bit too much the more i find wrong with it, but it is what it is now.
That's a first for me, seeing what happens when the rotor screws back out.
It's a nice looking car in good shape. Just be patient and work through the issues as they come.
Try some starting fluid to see if it fires off. If not then it's probably an ignition/electrical problem. If it does fire off then you have fuel delivery issue.
Even the Haines manual has a section on no start issues. It can guide you through some of the test procedures.
Good luck, hope you get her fired up and running with no major expenditures.
Welp. Got it running. Wants to stumble off idle. But i havent changed the plugs yet.. It is smoking out if the breather though. And it has a noise that is either a main or valve train im not sure.
Thoughts?

Your going to have smoke coming out of the breathers, the way your valve covers are set up. Suggest pulling valve covers to make sure rocker arms are set, an adjusted to specs
Been running breathers like that for years on all my Chevys, you will get some light smoke out of them....Did you find where your noise is coming from?
Jumped up to 38 degrees today....Oh most put shorts on...lol after -10 wind chill..Ever find your noise...? Went to shop an started water pump on 90 . 86 needs dash fix from Bantee...Drive truck all week , makes it tough...Spring is right around corner....
