I have an 86 Z51 4+3, got the car for next to nothing so I figured I would redo it. Got it up on stands in the shop today and slid under it to check things out. Now I see my first problem, it appears maybe someone replaced the sideplate on the trans. I have reverse light switch, OD solenoid switch, and speed sensor......thats it, no 1st, 2nd or 4th gear switches. Now what do I do?
a P/O probably tired of the oft-misunderstood logic and rewired it through the console switch.. solely! You don't need the other switches unless you wish to have it function as it did originally.
The button on the shifter and lower switch were all missing so I purchased new ones. Hopefully it will work when I get it all replaced. Still scratching my head as to why the whole sideplate was replaced.
Maybe the side cover had cracks where the shifter forks went thru? Or it may have had bad shifter forks and a PO simply decided to replace it as a unit? The 4-speed portion is a Borg-Warner Super T-10 and the side cover and forks on the 4+3 version should be interchangeable.
On my '87, there is a 1st Gear switch, but no 2nd or 4th gear switches. The Reverse switch is under the Reverse shifter shaft on the O/D housing as is the O/D solenoid harness connector.
