HELP ---just changing ignition switch

Default HELP ---just changing ignition switch
changing out the old ignition switch, easy hah, everything was going ok how does the telescopic steering wheel shaft stay in place r what holds in lock in? when I pulled it out I didn't know there was a small rod inside the shaft plus shaft key on the end of it, when I picked it up to put it back in and the small rod fell out and the shaft key fell offany help please, Thank You much
