Default WATER PUMP BLUES

I have a 96 vette. Im trying to avoid going to a mechanic or dealership. Im trying to get the old water pump off but of course, its never as easy as it looks....haha
I got the 3 bolts off the water pump on the passengers side easy. I got the top bolt off the drivers side, but cannot figure out how to get the last two bolts out...looks like the pulley is in the way on both bolts?? Has anyone changed out the water pump and know how to get the last two bolts out? Does the pulley have to come off? Does the Alternator or anything else have to come off? or is it just a matter of a special tool I need to get around this...or a wrench?? Please help..................:)
:cry :(

Take the pully off. wedge a screw driver between the pully hub and a bolt, to prevent it from turning, and loosen the bolts on the hub. Makes it possible to get to those other bolts. You might have to loosen your AC compresser and move it a few inches for clearance, but that should be about it.

I know the bolt you are talking about. It's a pain to get to. If I had to do it over again I would remove what ever brackets are in the way. Think it's the alternator bracket. Remember, after you get the bolt out you will still need to scrap away the old gasket material off the block. That's a pain also with the brackets in place. I just used a swivel head attached to the socket. It still a pain though.

ok, i have a couple more questions....
did you take the pulleys off or just use the swivel sockets...and did you use an extension? Did you take the alternator or anything off?

How did you get the pulley off? Do you need a puller? what is the easiest way to get the belt off if i need to take the pulleys off?

Im sorry for all the questions, but this is over my head a bit...the other bolts were easy, but now im getting to the hard part...hehe

i have removed my waterpump about 5 times in the last 2 months and its apart right now. I have never removed the pulleys to get to the bolts. The passenger sides are easy, the driver side should be easy to get to the top and the bottom of the 3 bolts. I did have my belt removed. The middle bolt needs a swivel and an extension. i used a 4 inch extension on the wratchet, then the swivel head and then the short socket. Slide the swivel/socket behind the pulley and with little wiggling you shoud be able to get the socket on the bolt. Although it will be slightly akward to remove the bolt with the wratchet on an angle its fairly simple.

I wont rule out havign to remove any pulleys though. All cars are different and so are tools. I dont have too much trouble removing the gasket material from the block but its proabably much easier with the pulley removed. Good luck.

Thanks for all your help everyone! I will try again tomorrow. I will go buy the universal joint and a swivel joint and try again. It just seemed like there wasnt enough room for a ratchet. THanks again...I'll keep ya posted!
 :yesnod:

I went to Sears and got a 14mm swivel socket all in one. Keeps the swivel closer to the bolt head which is what you want for that one.
