I've searched the forums but most of the connection issues were for post 1990 cars. I purchased my cable from OBD Diagnostics and downloaded the Datamaster software. I only have 3 freebies left (I'd like to see it work before I plunk down any money!) - Here's the sequence I get:

I'll keep searching for an equivalent problem, but if this looks obvious to anyone please let me know. I'm willing to use another software as well - Datamaster seemed to be pretty popular on the site.
Try TunerPro RT; not just TunerPro. Then get the ads or adx file for your vehicle. It has a 10 second nag screen on start up. If you like it, you can pay $40 to get rid of the nag screen and support the developer.
