Car Overheating?
This is my first post as a member so I apologize for my ignorance. I just bought a '94 LT1 coupe w/auto tranny and when I was in stop and go traffic, the engine temp needle seemed dangerously high. I didn't know there was a digital gauge until today so I dont know the exact temp it was running at.
My questions are as follows
- What is normal operating temp and what is considered too hot??
- I have read that turning on the AC actually helps cool the engine on these cars. Is this true?
Thanks in advance! I've never driven a car that ran this hot so I'm a little concerned.

2. Yes
Best to pull the top radiator shrould off and give a good cleaning. Give it a good flushing by pulling your knock sensors.
Is it noticeable when the fans turn on? Should I be actually able to hear them turn on? I just want to make sure that they are actually turning on and working properly.
Also, the analog gauge isn't really linear, so the needle looks higher than the reading really is. On the C5s they "fixed" this problem by making 220 read straight up on the gauge. That way is doesn't scare people by looking too far to the high end.

I ended up putting in an aluminum radiator anyway. Mine is a 94 lt1 convertible.
A lot depends on how mechanically inclined you are.
