86 sun visor repair vs replace
MrReno, thanks for the write up and the other thread. They look really good. I have a friend who is reupholstering my sailboat this winter and I never even thought of asking him to do the visors. I bet he could do that stitching in his sleep.
That's why I love this forum!

I have the "floopy ear" syndrome with the factory sun visors on my otherwise pristine Ruby. I think GM used a cardboard inside similar to what is in the packaging of a new shirt.
I don't think I can even find the factory correct ones with the mirror and vanity light, so just dealing with it, unless someone has a fix similar to the lumbar support motors for less then a buck.In frustration, I decided to see what I could do with the old ones. I cut the stitching off at the end of each one, removed the broken cardboard, cut the cloth covers down to where I had about 3/4-inch extending beyond what was left of the cardboard, tucked the cloth between the cardboard layers, and hand-stitched them back up with black thread.
First incision:
Surgical removal of floppy ear:
A peek at the inside of what's left:
Squeeze to separate the two layers of cardboard:
Edge of remaining cardboard:
Scissor-cut new radius at corner (should have cut a larger radius):
Top layer of cloth tucked in between two layers of cardboard:
Clamps holding things together while I'm stitching it back up:
First one finished, second one waiting to be done:
It's not perfect, but it looks SO much better than it did, and I'm okay with it for a while, at least. It wasn't difficult, just required some time and patience.
Live well,
SJW
