Default Driver side rearview mirror removal help

My 88 driver side rearview mirror rattles when the door is closed. I managed to remove the mirror from the trunion and it looks like there are 2 threaded rods, one larger one at the bottom center and the other is smaller at the bottom toward the outer side. I did accidently remove the large one but was afraid to remove the smaller rod. What do I need to do to get the mirror off? The black motor behind the glass is loose so I have to pull the mirror off.

I only know of one way to get the mirror off the black power pack carefully tug the mirror off the pins and gears to gain access to the 3 mounting screws. mirrors/power packs are for the most part a non serviceable part, that doesn't mean you cant find an old one and swap out some parts that might be worn out,or just install a good take off.

the trick is getting the mirror back onto the X pivot behind the mirror, to do that make sure that the threaded rods are mounted in their corresponding points on the mirror side, then slide the rods into the power pack carefully align the X pivot with its mounting points and push (it will take some force)and success is not guaranteed, but highly likely. when you buy a new (uninstalled if you can find one) mirror the glass is NOT mounted to backing plate and there are access holes thru the backing plate.

Thanks s carter. So I need to give the small threaded adjustment rod a little more persuasion to pull it out? Outside rearview mirror motor works but something is loose. Thank heavens it’s not the mirror glass.

The three large headed screws hold the motor assembly to the mounting bracket:

The two threaded adjusting rods just pull out of the motors. They make a rasping sound like they're breaking but it won't hurt anything. The pic also shows the trunnion that the mirror mounts on.

This picture shows the mounting bracket from the back. The mounting bracket is held in the mirror housing by three screws that tend to get loose and allow the mirror to bounce around:

Thanks Cliff. I wasn't real fond of the grinding noise. You have pictures on just about everything.
