My ac started blowing smoke. I turned it off and let down the windows and it stopped. How do I know if it's needing a new compressor or just barons or a clutch?

Don’t think a blower bearing would smoke (it would make noise also). The brushes might smell is there was not much brush material left or commutator was bad.
(But that's true, the fan is basically isolated from the motor itself.)
How much smoke, color and how thick was it.
Check the heater core and for any wetness on the passenger side on the fire wall inside. Don’t know if it is possible if a leak in the core could form a vapor cloud.
Does the A/C still work and blow cold?
If the evaporator freezes up and then defrosts, vapor (or smoke) can come out of the vents.
There is a rubber tube from the A/C ducts to the blower motor to keep it cool. If the blower motor started smoking the smoke could back up through that tube and come into the cabin. I vote for a check of the blower motor.
Does the "smoke" have a fragrance? The smell of an overheated electric motor is very pungent. Is the fan motor hot?
If your a/c fan still works the next day, it wasn't your overheated fan motor or the bearings causing the "smoke". These things won't be intermittent failures. If they fail, they won't fix themselves! In addition, if your fan motor has so much of a load on it to overheat the motor or the bearings that it smokes, the a/c fuse or fusible link "A" will blow!
What was the RH when you saw the "smoke"? If the humidity is very high, an a/c system in excellent condition can make the air cold enough to create a 100% humidity frost cloud! I've seen it, too! Talk about cool!!
I think desertmike got it right.
