The quickest and easiest way to check the alternator is to check the voltage at the battery when the motor is off. Then start the engine and check the voltage. Voltage at the battery while off should be 12-12.6 volts, while running should be around 14 volts. If you don’t get an increase in the voltage when the engine is running, it may be a number of things. First check all the wires/connections and cleanliness of the terminals. If you want to did in a little deeper, the August 2002 edition of Corvette Fever magazine has an excellent article of how to do a rebuild and check the internal workings of an alternator.

It's true you need to check the voltage the alt. is putting out, which should be between 13.8 and 14.2. Even more critical though is how many amps. it's returning to the bat. It really needs to be load tested. If you don't have one, than while the meter is connected and engine running turn on headlights ac radio etc. the readings should not drop. :yesnod:
