1988 Headlights don't work

I got off work early today so I had time to work on the problem. I went inside the car and put the dash cover back on and the bezels back on. The interior is back to normal. I put the battery terminal sck on and wiggled the links and the headlights rolled back. I reached in and pulled the switch they functioned normally. Good thing because it was getting dark outside and I wanted to drive it to the gas station and put air in a flat. I sprayed Fix a Flat in the rear tire and went down to the gas station and filled it up. The headlights stayed on working fine. I burned the tires up at a few lights and was happy to drive it again after a month damn near. I pulled into the driveway and killed the lights. I pulled the switch and nothing zero zip. I will buy some fusible links and replace them all. Hopefully I can put this problem to rest after I go through it again.

Are you sure the new switch is the right one for your car? Do you have an ohm meter? I'm wondering if either the contacts/function of the new switch is different than your own one. If possible, take the new one and the old one (on the bench) and check out each of the sets of contacts with the switch off, first click and full on and see if they check out the same. The other thing I can think of is it possible one of the connectors is flipped or something else when moving the wires from the old switch to the new one.
Just some thoughts. I've had a strange one in the past with an old truck. Turned out 2 wires were switched around on it, so passing along the thought.
