I am told this is a smog related thing, and I could block off the intake/TB ports and run non PCV breathers on my valve covers.
Smog is not a concern of mine. And I have a non PCV breather (no little port off of it) already, and would rather not replace it ($). Also another thing that will help clean my enigne compartment up and make it look how I want it to (I love the way our 65 engine bay looks, motor, alt, ps, no junk...)
The PCV doesn't cost you any power. Personally, I think it's one of the few emission devices that may actually be a benefir to your engine as it helps burn some of the cr@p out of your crank-case. If you really wanted to you could run breathers. Just be prepared to eventually have a dirtier engine compartment from oil mist/vapors making it past the breather filters. Maybe not noticeable at first, but over time it will add up.
It releives possitive crank case ventilation. This is a good thing and will not cost you power. Some may loose a little oil over time due to it getting ingested in the intake. I never thought it was a smog related item.
I did bypass mine once and ran breathers. The breathers could not keep up and would seep oil onto the headers. I reinstated the PCV and am much happier now.
Part of the intention is to keep from venting gas vapors into the atmosphere, but your car will be fine going with breathers. Areas around breathers do tend to get nasty though.
I've had the exact same experience as Vette92. I went back to PCV. It's nice to have a vacuum in the crankcase rather than atmospheric pressure. That oughta help the engine's efficiency in some way.
Just happens to be one of the rare pieces of emissions equipment that is uncomplicated, easy to plumb, lowers HC emissions, and quite possibly makes more power.
A lot of drag racers run a hose from the valvecover to the exhaust collector. No emissions benefit but perhaps it works better than engine vacuum. I think NHRA Pro Stock engines usually have high volume smog pumps that are even better than using the exhaust.
