Default Fried Tranny/Converter

On another thread I asked about what may be the problem with my tranny...I was advised that it could be a broken converter/bolts sheared off and/or a cooked tranny. Question #1: I am kinda new to the corvette specs......Is that tranny (88 coupe auto) a 700r4? or what else could it be?
Question #2: I am fairly mechanically literate but is pulling that tranny out something a home mechanic could do or should I have a pro do it?
Question #3: If the tranny is cooked can it be rebuilt or do I need a new one?
and lastly: I would rather have a 4 or 6 speed....too much $$$ or work?

Thanks guys......I am really glad I found this place...I have really learned a lot from other's threads!!!

700R4 :yesnod: 4L60E didn't start until '94

if you're mechanically inclined, you can save a LOT of $ by dropping it yourself and taking it somwhere

yes, it can be rebuilt.

I just had my 700R/4 dropped rebuilt and installed for $950.

You need to drop the exhaust, drive shaft and rear cross-member to pull the tranny.

If the tranny is "crooked" it may be a bent case (??) or loose rear mount (and/or motor mount).

For an '88 you may want to upgrade your stock 1,500rpm TC to a 2,000rpm unit for a little more torque on launch.

BTW, you can cut notches in your A4 shifter to give more shift and position feel (details on my site).

If you can find a good used 4+3 it should be a fairly easy swap, though it may take a different drive shaft and wiring harness along with a chip change.

Thanks Guys...
Another question...by reading some of the other guy's threads...some complain that the 700r4 was not the greatest tranny. I also heard that a TH400 would bolt up.....if I stayed automatic......would the 700r4 still be good to rebuild for upto 400hp or so?

Depends on how well you have it built. I'm about to have a MegaRaptor 700R4 put in my car just to see if a 700R4 can be built that actually holds up to abuse.

You can check out the specs at http://www.transmissioncenter.net/700MegaRaptor.htm

This is the best 700R4 I've found. If I can break this one then I'll never touch another 700R4 again! I feel pretty confident about the MegaRaptor though. If it breaks then I'll be converting over to a 4L80E. Noone's done the 4L80E in a C4 yet so it will be an interesting journey should I end up going that direction in the future.
