Nope. Code checkers are glorified and expensive paperclips for an OBD1 system. Never had much use for either

A scanner will give you a good INDICATION of where to look and that is about it. The other method of repair is to throw parts at the car till you get it right.

I know what you are thinking. "Will I be able to throw the correct part the first time?" Well to tell you the truth in all this excitement I kinda lost track myself. But being this is an older Vette, the most expensive car to fix in the world and would blow your wallet clean open, you've gotta ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?

The crude OBD system in '80s Vettes is very stupid. About all it can do is tell you if a circuit is open or shorted.

Aklim is right about a scanner or ALDL cable and scanner software. That's the best and easiest way to find your problem.

I would start with the basics that the scanner is indicating. Check for a brown wire from the distributor (the ESC swire) make sure its still plugged in. Check at the rear of the LH valve cover as there is wiring that may have gotten pinched as suggested. This sounds like something that happened to me where I had a new clutch installed and when the shop put the engine and tranny back together they pinched the main harness between the block and the bell housing. Drove it 20 miles home and when I went back out to take off again it wouldnt start. Drove it long enough for the wires to abrade thru and kill the power and that was it.

Good luck!

I think you meant EST, not ESC.

ESC is Electronic Spark Control and refers to the knock retard system.

EST is Electronic Spark Timing and refers to the spark advance system.

The EST wire is tan with a black stripe. You disconnect this wire to disable ECM control of the timing and set the mechanical (static) timing by rotating the distributor. This is the one:
