Default 94 - Doing Valve Cover Gaskets

I thought I would tackle the right side easer one first. But there is this pipe over the rear corner of the valve cover that carries coolant in it. Never really noticed the pipe was so close to the cover in the past. The cover is restricted from being released by the pipe being in the way.

Do I have to remove the rubber hose from the pipe (drain some coolant) before I am able to get the valve cover off? I tend not to force the cover past the pipe in fear of breaking the metal pipe at this time. If I take the hose off the pipe, will it clear? (still looks close).

(I just cant believe its designed like this).

Not at the car right now, but I think I know the pipe and hose you are talking about. I would say you don't have to mess with it, as I recall adjusting the valves on my 94, with the engine running. It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure I took a while to do it, and coolant wasn't gushing out all over the place. There should be enough clearance to wiggle the valve cover out.

Spent a lot of time on this today. I did have to drain the system and pull the hose. I also found out that the stud for the short hold down bolts on far left need to be removed also. Only removed the rear one which gave me some more additional clearance and finally got the cover off but still had to push on the pipe.

I did not even know that stud came out till I saw the far right one where I had some visibility since I had the cover on an angle.

Then it was cleaning every piece and putting all the new gaskets on. Put coolant back in and ran to temp so it could cool down and suck from the overflow tank the coolant it needed.

So right side is complete and starting on the left side. Lots of stuff to take apart but it's just a bunch of bolts but at least I can see exactly what has to be done. I think this is going to be easier.

Not much feedback on my thread. I guess not many have been down this road.

So here is a few things to know if you should do this job. (New pictures, deleted photobucked)

This stud can be removed with an allen head driver and removed before cover is removed. It will give you additional clearance.
Good picture of the pipe over the cover.

You can see the water pipe on the left that would be over the valve cover. I removed the hose which was necessary and gave much additional clearance. But the pipe still scrapped along the cover removing it and putting it back on.

This is one of the two studs that the plastic cover snaps on to. It just unscrews which releases the hold down for the wire bunch. The wires need to move to get the cover off.

Is this only on auto cars? My 94 doesn't have that stud and it looks like that hose wouldn't get in the way of a valve cover removal on mine.

The pipe connects to the rear of both heads according to the FSM. It's hard to see back there and to remove something of would seem to be a real challenge. Pipe is "plenum air bleed hose" probably so air does not get trapped in head.

There is some clearance from the pipe but you do have to lift the cover some distance to clear the rockers. The side of the cover could not get over the rockers and stuff.

It is an automatic. I don’t know what stud you are refereeing to as I called out 2 studs in 2 separate pictures.

Nest time I look at another C4 I will look closer to see any differences.

Maybe your coolant bleed pipe has just been "tweaked" some. I don't notice that in most under-hood snapshots. It will be interesting to see some responses.

Look at this '92 which should be the same routing for the bleed pipe but not fuel etc.

Real interesting pipe and one that I did not want to break. I tried to lift the last bend up a little but it's a strong pipe and just wasn't coming with the force I was willing giving it. I did not want to snap or crack it.

I also looked for pictures on the internet, first Haynes book and FSM I have but really never found a picture with any good angles that you could really see.

So maybe a next car show I could see several cars at one time and see what's what.
Going to finish the left side today, just want to do some additional cleaning while things are more open.
