I have an 1986 and the ECM locks the torque converter way to early in my opinion. It will go into lock-up at 22 mph and that is what cause the bog because the car shifts into overdrive at less then 30 mph and with the converter locked the RPM is less then 1000 and the car has no acceleration until you really push the throttle and the converter unlocks or the transmission downshifts. To solve this problem I changed the chip to raise the lock points of the torque converter in low gears and high gears to suit my liking. I believe I changes them to 42 mph lock points when the car was stock and it worked well.
In the mid to late 80s and early 90s all of our police cars had the od mode on them. When driving around town at slower speeds or in stop and go the transmission was always "hunting" for the right gear. We started having maintenance issues so put out a general order to push the button to select out of the od mode. Cars responded much better, got rid of the irritating "hunting" or shifting up and down into and out of od. Maintenance problems seemed to diminish pretty significantly. When I drive my 89 I try to remember to drive in D and it is much more pleasant to drive, less bogging down and better performance. If I am going to drive over 50 out of town I slip it back to the od and all is good. Not sure if there is a mpg difference.
Pete,
I could make you a chip if that is what you want. You would have to pay for costs and shipping and be willing to install the new chip and G1 adapter in your computer.
Or I could send you a modified bin file and you could buy the equipment to burn it to a new chip and then you would be able to make changes as you see fit.
