Default My 1st Corvette Engine Build-- Need some help?

Greetings everyone from Hatboro, PA.

Just purchased this 76000 mile 85 C4 with the Engine and Transmission not installed. I have a 350 engine sitting on a stand ready to install. The 700R4 will be rebuilt completely. I'm looking for suggestions and some tech help thru the build.

Here is my 350 ready to go.

350 2 Bolt Main,
4.00 Bore – 3.480 Stroke
Vortec Heads 12558060 – 64/170
Eagle Crank – 103523480 – 1 Piece 3.480
Crane Cam – 270-100132 – 2500-5800rpm
Speed Pro Pistons - STL-H345NP – 4” bore +5.00cc Hypereutectic

1) What manifold would work with my vortec heads and the original TPI?

2) What type of exhaust would you recommend? Chambered, Dual Exhaust, Original with or w/o cat?

3) Solid Motor Mounts or Polyurethane?

4) Will I have to have the computer reprogrammed To recognize the new motor.

ANYTHIN ELSE YOU ALL HERE AT THE FORUM could think of??

Where do you want more of your torque, up high or down low? What sort of driving do you tend to do?

The Plan is for a street car, no real plans for drag racing. Would like to cruise mostly with the wife and some long trips Corvette museum etc...

Scoggin Dickey used to have a manifold that married Vortec heads to TPI intake, I don't see it in their web site maybe you should call them.

Thanks ClaudioC4. I have researched and Scoggin Dickey has the vortec to tpi manifold. I've also found the original article in Hot Rod Magazine and reviewed the tech. Probably will order the manifold in the next few weeks.

Anybody have any suggestions on how to set up my 700r4? I'm going to have old one completely rebuilt.

poly mounts would be fine
Ck for coil bind, seat pressure etc and retainer to guide clearance for sure

Not a trans guy sorry couple here that build them on a regular basis though. Youll want to upgrade for sure if thats the original 700r

I hope the pictures are NOT showing some important things....like wires. I hope that the wiring harness is tucked out of the way someplace.

You will have to have a new chip made for the change (cam) in your motor.

Have the auto rebuilt with heavy duty clutches and a 2400 stall converter. For daily driving you will not notice any major difference until you get on it. Also a mild shift kit....make the trans last longer.

Your going to need a 2500 stall converter.

Your going to need the computer tuned. That cam is not going to run well at all on the stock tune.

It's going to want a good free flowing exhaust system. Corvette Central makes some dual systems for the 84-91 TPI cars with various mufflers or muffler eliminators.... You could also install a 92-96 LT1/LT4 exhaust system with a little fabrication depending on which exhaust manifolds or headers you use.

If you have an 85 with a 870 computer I would go to Ed Wright (Fastchip) , he can burn a chip for your computer that will work with your mods.

Thanks John,

Yes the harness is tucked under the firewall. All connectors are there for the tpi and injectors. I might be missing a few items buy ill check along the way. I have a parts & illustration catalog.

At those prices, I have doubts it is made of good material with mandrel bends. Galvanized maybe?

look in Summit racing for your vortec manifold too. That's where I bought mine,,eldebrock. I do NOT knoe if the eldebrock will join with stock runners, call and find out. I bought the high flow runners to go with it. If you DO buy the eldebrock, get a sandpaper roll for your drill to get rid of the flashing around the ports. Another member also had to do that. Car looks in good shape and welcome to the forum
