Default Steering column

I was getting in my 1988 C4 and my thigh jammed into the turn signal. The signals still work but the high beam setting is broke. Plastic broke inside is my guess. How do I access this to replace what's broken ? Will the steering wheel need removed to get the plastic cover off ?

Hopefully, you did not damage the actual lever pivot.

Hopefully, you did not damage the actual lever pivot.

In an early column I believe he's likely busted up the pivot but he should be able to do diagnostics with out removing and tearing into the column first.

Also for an early column the OP needs additional tools and to purchase some additional maintenance parts before beginning.

The problem is likely in the vicinity that you've posted snapshots of BUT diagnostics first, gather the additional tools/bolt and the maintenance parts.

I mention the "set-screw" size needed in this post and there's some links in there to Jim Shea's papers that even though they're based on C3 column they're more typical of the earlier C4 column.

For an early tilt/telescopic I believe there's way better information here:

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...post1588111719

I had a very good one but it's on a recently failed HDD that didn't have a back-up. I don't know that I'm interested in spending the money to recover it. My minds still good and I can find most everything except of course what's on personal web-sites that aren't maintained any longer and the snapshots are mostly not around. Just the expired links!!

between Jim shae's papers and the FSM I believe an early column does well. The earlier BETTER that i had I'm sure was Cadillac which is the same. I'll poke around and try to find that one maybe.

Step 1. Remove the steering wheel ?
Do I need to go find a C4 junk yard for the parts I need ? I see the turn signal handle with the cruise control cost over $70. I will go ahead and buy it so it's nice and NEW. I have thousands of dollars in the interior. This week or next I am going to pull the seats and carpet. I have new leather seat cushions, carpet, and sound deadner.
So far I see references to the C3 steering column. I have never had any need to access the column so this is new to me.
