I am looking for recommendations for a new Distributor for a 85 TPI with a Mild Cam.
all input would be appreciated
Is the original housing problem free? Condition of the harness grommets? Is money an issue?
I'd likely do a later small cap with external coil with the correct harness connectors. Any '90+ or so GM & even '88+ GM truck should do and maybe Jim's Performance for the harness modifications.
What is wrong with the old one? You won't see much of an advantage besides having a smaller wallet. I have the small cap one because I have a Holley Stealth Ram that demanded it.

See if this link works, if not look for an Accel 59109 on eBay, this link is for a new one, and there are one or two used ones. Just an optionfor you. I was looking awhile ago and have had good luck with Accel dist..
Well I believe you might have multiple options. Everything depends upon maybe personal preference and how deeply you want to get into your wallet.
If you use a GM 1103749 as a reference that will do most all small distributor and see how expensive the harness to adapt it to the original "coil in cap". I'd maybe call Jim's Performance and ask about the harness required. His I believe is "plug and play" to the car. Based on the price of his harness you could then shop any distributor that you wanted to move to distributor and remote coil. I'd ask him also what's required for the tach signal. Does his harness take this into consideration when using it? You ask. I believe I'd prefer his to the "off the shelf" MSD harnesses.
He understands TPI and maybe might have quality recommendations for you. He would be my first call.
Even if you want to stay with "coil in cap" I'd call him. He GETS IT!! He's NOT a "STORE FRONT".
Maybe after a conversation you shop "local" with CL or maybe a performance shop for used etc. Maybe even a WTB here on the CF - you'll know for sure the how to and what's required.
Its 30 years old, It has detonation at higher RPMS, its hard top start and its a brand new engine.
and **** yes money is a issue, I want a decent replacement.
Other then the age why do you think those are distributor issues? The issues are probably related to:
-Knock sensor circuit issue for detonation
-Tune or cold start injector or fuel pressure for the long cranking time
Research, identify and eliminate the issues. They are probably not related to the distributor.

That's why I mentioned/asked condition of original housing, harness grommets etc. in my 1st post. He mentioned new engine so I thought the "condition" of would be easy questions to answer.
I thought that a conversation with Jim's might maybe influence the OP to maybe keep what he's got and search for and repair the issues.
Can you describe what the spark is doing? Is it not a blue flame? If you hook up a spark plug and ground the threads and crank, is the spark interval not consistently on at the similar interval?
I'm not sure if you really have a need for a a spark box. Maybe a new stock distributor or a small cap one.
I noticed that when I don't charge the cap and rotor in spring and try to stretch it into the next season, by July or August, I have missing at WOT till I change the cap and rotor. Maybe the system is near the end of the rope?
