Hello everyone. I've been having trouble with my 89 Corvettes ignition. It can turn over fine but will not return to the off position. Leaving the car running unless disconnected.

Any quick fixes you can think of?
If you can't TWIST the key/cylinder back to OFF/LOCK the issue is either the cylinder /key OR the mechanism (gear, rack and rod) that moves the ignition switch which is remotely mounted lower on the column.
Do you have the FSM?
Is your issue different than what I mentioned? Be a little more specific maybe with your description.
THIS IS NOT A CORVETTE TILT but the ignition actuator, rod, rack, switch, gear and spring are identical.
If its an A4; does shifter go all the way in and lock in Park where button pops up and/or has a sticky fluid spilled in to shifter plate of console. There is a cable that is intended to keep key from being removed unless shifter is in Park. Shifter could be misadjusted or gummed up. Cable goes from shifter to column.
Had the same problem on my 94 a few years back. It was my key cylinder that had to be replaced. Just got old and warn out and jammed up. Had to get all new keys for the new cylinder.
Did the job myself, keys more costly than the cylinder. Borrowed the lock plate tool from AutoZone.

I don't think this is the issue based on the OP's statement that the key will not return to the off position. Even if the tranny was in anything other than park, the key should go at least to the off position, maybe not to lock but at least to off.
If it was the rod between the cylinder and the actual switch, again the key I would think would turn backwards to off or lock though the engine could still be running.
If I had to bet, I'ld go more towards the lock cylinder than anything else.
To me, everything seems to lead back to the cylinder as being the likely cause.

The OP has tilt/travel and his disassemble/assembly is substantially more complicated, he needs to be careful with "plastics" and likely should buy at least the retainer before starting the disassemble.
OP ain't been back and since he mentioned EASY maybe he's moved on to a TOYOTA or HONDA LOL - EASY financing maybe!!
