I am collecting the last parts for the motor in my 91. I have the LPE 211/219 cam and AFR 180 heads. The heads require 3/8 stud non self aligning rr. I was going to go with the ultra pro magnums pn: 1602-16 but the service guy couldn't tell me if they work with the stock valve covers. Does anyone know if these work or have any other suggestions.
Just a little more information needed: 1.5 RR or 1.6????
1.5 RR the highest lift will be .527" and should fit under the stock covers using a taller VC gasket.
1.6 RR the highest lift will be .562 and will require doubling the VC gasket (gluing two together) or you can sand off the end of the exhaust RR at a 45 degree angle about 1/8" in. This will keep it from kissing the VC.
I had a 74211 in my 85. The exhaust lift was .562 and I sanded the exhaust rollers (push rod end) and had no issue using a thicker gasket and the stock covers. You will have to remove the drip tabs.

Those are pretty pricey @ $166 for eight. Aluminum will net a few more HP due to the lightweight. Crane golds & scorpions are highly suggested. your in the right direction. not choosing something like "proform" I'm using S.S. comp copies. no complaint's minus. parts washing was necessary before installing. What springs are you running? your grind is custom?? close to LE 212 sleeper cam. I believe the valve cover center bolt guides will need to be trimmed. the Fulcrum will be to wide. to clear that space.
383 admiral these are supposedly lighter to the valve.
OP I don't know if they will work with your stock covers, the AFR gasket rail height may be diff or maybe you can use a thick gasket. But the comp ultra pro mag are the only thing I like atm from comp cams. I have a few sets and am happy-ish with them. The 1st set I replaced a brand new set of comp ultra gold's that were so loud compared to any other alum rocker I've had I figured something was wrong and changed them in like 200miles.
The ultra pro mags have one flaw, they rust easy! If your not gonna install them soon soak them in oil or even if you install and don't fire it up right away poor some oil over them. I've been burned three times by rust on those rockers!
edit: Correct rocker geometry(pushrod length) will make a diff as well, but I wouldn't run shorter to make anything fit. Just saying too long will only make it worse.
Harland has 2 weaker Aluminum T3511 @ 140g & 144g
Comp reds aluminum 7000 series @ 154g same as the CrMo pro mags
I would suggest stronger VS slightly lighter.
Springs are the std springs that come with AFR heads. They are good to .600 6300rpm.
Cam - is a standard offering by LPE. .530/.560 lift with 1.6 rockers. I know other newer cams have been released but it's proven and good chips are available for this combo. It's a speed density motor and I want it to run right.
Rockers- I want 1.6 ratio rr
Which rockers are stronger the aluminum or the steel. I am worried about the aluminum because of all the horror stories about them breaking.
Cheap alum is that! Just depends on the load, some go forever while others fail often on an aggressive cam or stiff springs. Alum has a cycle life and I'm no cam expert.
Your springs are fine. As long as they match the setup height and seat pressure. For the cam. RPM range And 1.6rr. Just asking. In case the heads were purchased bare. Does AFR tell you what vendor?? Sounds like you will need to mate 2 gaskets. As per above. You will need to clearance the covers. Steel is the best material. Aluminum breaks down after so many stress cycles. Like myself. I would avoid aluminum rockers. Ps. LS7 lifters are great substitutes. Trick flow push rods are the best price to performance ratio.

Basically you are putting together what I had in the 85...see my signature in the post....180 AFR heads and the LPE 74211 cam. Like I said above, you will have to either double up on the gaskets or sand off the end of the RR at the push rod end to clear the stock covers.
Or put it together and start it up and listen for the rockers striking the VC and then shut it down and make your adjustments.
Just get different valve covers. I used the Proform valve covers and they worked great. I was concerned about having enough room with my TPI runners not allowing the Profoems to clear, but they did👍
I used the summit brand 1.6 narrow body rockers, they fit fine under the stock valve covers, juts had to machine off the drip tabs. I have run more then 200,000 miles on these alum rockers and never had any trouble and I beat my car hard soIi would not worry too much about a failure.
