Default Modifying exhaust

1989 auto Trans Stock

While I'm waiting for my cylinder heads to be completed, I have been making some changes. I removed air pump system, egr system, and I am making some changes to my exhaust system I am open to suggestions. I want to get rid of pre cats entirely. I don't know what is more cost effective, have the pre cats cut off or buy new front y pipe without pre cats. To buy new would cost me around 240.00 including shipping Don't know what price to modify my current y pipe. I don't know whether to leave off main cat or replace it with newer tech cat. I thought the best way might be to just buy new front y pipe with no pre cats, but with main cat from one of the major companies, however they all seem to come with air tube hook up and I don't know if it would hurt cat to not have air pumped into it. If it doesn't hurt it I could just plug it. I am saving all smog stuff so it can be re installed if desired. I am also going to install new mufflers, I just have decided on which ones yet. Might go with walker quiet flow. I want both out lets on each side to work. Like I said I'm open to ideas on best and most cost effective way. Not trying to make major power increase, just getting rid of some of the junk.

If i were you. I would be looking for a stock LT1 exhaust. To replace your L98 system.
I just recently sold my center section & mufflers. I'm selling the manifolds & cats.
I'm sure someone in TX will sell you a stock LT1 setup.

Will the LT1 system bolt up to L98 exhaust manifolds, if not will LT1 manifolds bolt up to L98 heads?

I do believe. The L98 manifolds are center dumps. And the tri flange is the same size. Making the LT1 cat back. bolt up. The LT1 cats do have different brackets. They also have dual O2's you can plug one side.

FYI - new, walker front y-pipe (w/o pre-cats), $142 (shipped) from summit racing - best price I found. I have purchased this assembly, and found it to be a quality product. as for the mufflers, I did go with the walker quietflows - EXCELLENT!!! I don't know why they call them QUIETflows - they sound great! in fact, they damn near rival corsa's for the sound and they have no drone. you can get the whole exhaust from summit racing, new, for around $560 shipped. BTW, I recommend band clamps vs conventional, u-bolt types. cost a little more, but well worth it.
