That looks like a front shock to me. Unless you have something totally different on a 96, there should be a loop on the top and another on the bottom to hold the shock on via studs or bolts.

This being my first Y-body rodeo, I can't say what yours might look like, but this is what the rear shock looks like:

That looks like top rear with the 2 bolt mount still attached. 96 has pin top and stud loop bottom.
