Actually was running pretty good... surprisingly enough! I jacked it up with my 3 ton floor jack at the rear jack point and that lifts the entire side of the car up. Then I just get under with a creeper and have at it.
Did mine this week. 46,000 miles, I'm the 3rd owner. Had the car 2 months. Fuel filter was the last routine maintenance item i did. It was acdelco and assume it was original.
Didn't have all the solids yours did but a much finer rust colored semi liquid. It ran great but noticed it now starts much quicker. Won't wait 46,000 more miles to replace next time.
Bought a set of low incline ramps to do all my under vehicle work. All caught up now on all fluids, plugs, cap/rotor, and filters.

Never get under a car with just a jack holding it up. It's a good way to risk shortening your life.
Not to worry guys... Just because I didn't mention a jackstand, doesn't mean I wasn't using one... I'm 50 years old and been working on cars since I'm 13 years old.... I understand safety is first.

OP you should pull your fuel pump and change the strainer, not too hard to do. My car sat for a long time with what seems like less than a full tank of gas. The fuel pump assembly was very rusty which dropped a lot of rust particles into the tank. I got most of that out by using a siphon to vacuume out the bottom of the tank and I had paint filters in the funnel going into a gas can to monitor the stuff coming out.

Yes, I actually had thought of that.... I just filled it with premium last night... Going to have to wait now until it goes down some. If I go that far, Ill change the whole unit out. For some reason my dash display only reads 107 miles for range no matter how much fuel is in it.... Don't know if theres a correlation there with the float device... Either way the previous owner said his father changed the fuel pump about 12 years ago... its probably not a bad idea...
I've seen fuel filters go 50,000 miles and more and never looked like that. Hence there's got to be something going on in the fuel tank. I'm sure the tank is going to need a clean out and then see what the root cause is causing all this build up in the tank.
The filter on bottom of pump might be ripped. Possibly the whole pump & sender assembly may have to be replaced if it's rusting.

This car spent much of its life in Arizona I believe, then Indiana for the last 3 or so... I was thinking it could have been the gas station where the PO was filling up perhaps.... Not too sure. I do believe though, that the filter has been on there since the fuel pump was changed 12 years ago..... I do plan on changing out the entire unit in the near future.. The underside metal parts of the car have absolutely no rust anyplace. I knew of a gas station way back when, where the owners used to top off the in ground tanks with a garden hose.... So who knows....

I couldn't believe what came out of mine.... I have no clue how long its been on the car, but I'm guessing too long.
Hi
Perhaps the fuel pump is about to fail .....
All that crap has gone through OR come from the pump, they only last around 10 years from my experience.
20 years I have had my c4 and it has gone through 2x fuel pumps, they are cheap so don't wait to be stranded on the side of the road.
