Default 84 vette intake upgrade???

Hello all!

I am a new user who decided to join this great forum after using it a lot for other information although I have had a hard time finding certain information that I am looking for. I have an 84 vette that I bought as my first car and have been working on it for the past 8 years. It has came along away sense I first bought it. I rebuilt the motor last year (first one ever) and it came out pretty good, didnt blow up so that's a plus! It has a cam, headers and good heads but the same bottle neck crossfire intake. I knew it would be a power restrictor when I was building the motor but wanted to get the rest of the motor A+ before doing intake work. Now it is time for intake work and that leads me into my question. I am pretty set on using the pro flo xt with a wiring harness and ecm off an 86 vette. I am not good with electrics so this set up seems to be the easies for my abilities and the cheapest.

My question is will this set up even work? ( I don't see why not)
Is there a better electrical set up I could go with that isn't much harder?
I know that it wouldn't be 100% with a stock tune but will it be at least 90% good?

I have many more questions but those are the top 3. Thank you all in advance and if you have a better intake set up then feel free to give your opinion!

My >02 is to leave the electronics alone as there is significant differences between an 84 and an 86. They have the illusion of similarity.

As CuisinartVette said, get yourself a Renegede intake and pop it on. With your other modifications, you intake swap will make a difference. Also, you really don't want to introduce to many variable as once when modifying; swap, test, prove... before moving on to the next.

Also, hit up BUCCANEER on the C3 forum. He is really good with he L83 set up and can point you in the right directions with your mod combination.

Thanks you all for your replies! I have thought about the renegade and im sure it would be a step up from mine so it is still an option. The reason I was looking more into swapping the harness and comp is bc my car has been plague with wiring problems ever sense I got the car so I would really like the replace the harness and comp anyway.
I thought they were pretty similar. Any chance you know what is different about them besides abs? I was thinking about using 85 parts but the 86 computer is a faster operating systems. Also the 85s have some maf burn off relay or somthing like that next to the ecm where as the 86 are controlled by the ecm.

This is why you want to stay 84; the 84's have a MAP sensor- totally different system.

If your system is really jacked up, you have two options; 1) get an 84 harness and remove, route and plug or 2) pay for a full on custom wiring job.

If it were me, I'd find a harness on Ebay for 100 and reroute.

True they are different systems but if I replaced the harness and ecm and bought the sensors I need like a maf sensor would it work? Or am I missing something?
A costume harness would be a nice way to tidy up the engine bay and get rid of the wires for the smog and egr but wouldn't be worth the money in my opinion.

If you want to use the 86 harness and the pro flo xt you could use an EBL Flash ecm . No MAF is used, ls1 throttle bodies are cheap on ebay and the pro flow is set up to use ls1 map sensor. And you just plug into your PC to tune.

Thanks!! I am reading about the EBL Flash ecm right now and it sounds like just what I need. Do you have experience with this system or have done tuning before? I have never ventured into tuning and don't want to get in over my head or mess something up trying. Yeah I will get an ls1 style TB for sure if go this route

There is a little bit of a learning curve with the ebl flash, but i found it very rewarding.

Thirdgen has a subforum for dyi prom, the creator of the eblflash posts there.
many use it as a window for tech support.

I have been reading about it all night at work when I didnt have work to do and it sounds exactly what I have been looking for. Been looking for the past year so I was pretty excited when you pointed me to right what I was looking for! I emailed the creator so make sure im getting exactly what I need before I buy it. Have not read all the info in it so im not sure if it's covered in his website or not but does it work properly with manual trans? Or will I still have to use oem ecm? Sounds like it will work but not sure. Also glad it will work with oem dash and has a rev limiter so triple bonus!

My 86 was an automatic converted to a a ZF6. I have the EBL FLASH and a pro flo xt. Happy with both. EBL FLASH has a big following on the thirdgen.org camaro forum. Good support from Dynamic EFI and corvette and camaro forums.

Thanks for the info!! Ill look it up on that website too. What injectors are you using? Was the EBL flash a pretty straight forward swap?

I have 35# BOSCH EV14 injectors. There are a few wires to repin or move, all explained on the website. If you can follow a wiring schematic it is easy.

I can read a wiring schematic a little bit so I should be ok with that as well. Thank you very much. Will hopefully hear back from them soon so I can order every!

For the EBL flash, Bob sent me a nice cheat sheet for the factory wires.

If your looking to change intake and injectors, you could use it as a base line and run new leads from ebl flash using the wiring diagrams located on the website.

Bob will likely help you out the best he can, he seems pretty good about that.

What distributor are you using? I know I'll need a small cap and I have read a Fbody will work. Did it plug right in or will I have to make modifications?
