Default 93 ECU issues

I've had my Vette for about 4 years and my best guess is the ECU isn't working properly. I've opened it up and nothing seems to be burnt out. The reason I know ya the ecu is because when the car is running it could suddenly just shut off. I also ran the car and tapped the ecu which caused it to immediately shut off. I'm not sure if it needs a new chip or a whole new ecu put together. Anything advice or directions to the right parts would help. Thanks.

This is the ecu I bought the car with I think it was modified and doesn't have the oe chip could that cause the issues as well?
This is the chip that is currently installed.

The stock chip is the blue memcal that is attached to the side of the adapter that is plugged into the stock location. If you want to see how it runs on the stock chip pull out the adapter and plug the stock chip in. FYI make sure the adapter is seated properly, this could be your issue.

The 92-93 ECMs often have issues with colder solder joints. I had to send mine in on my '92 to get it repaired.

So I took the extra chip out and installed only the blue one. It started up fine as usual. But I tapped on the ecu like I did before. It didn't shut off but it did lower the idle quite a bit almost shutting off. However after a few minutes the car warmed up some I tapped the ecu and it shut right off. Now it won't start. Usually it does this and start back after a few minutes or the next time I try it. Thanks a lot for your input. Anything to help get this car on the road without having to worry about it shutting off on me is much appreciated.

Hi Jim after looking over the solder joints they all look really good. It could be a possibility that's the issue. Thanks.

IMO: remove jet chip, place chip in garbage.
SIA Electronics in Illinois for refurb of ECM if needed.

So I removed the jet chip. It started right up but after running for a few minutes shut off completely and won't start. Any other suggestions? Or should I just try to get a new ecu?

If you tapped on the computer and the car died, and it sounded like this was pretty consistent behavior, it's hard not to suspect the ECM. You'll find other threads in which the same "tap test" was used.

I forgot to mention, when I started t earlier I did the tap test. But surprisingly nothing happened. It ran fine. So I let the car run for a few more minutes then it Suddenly shut off.

Any codes set? Paper clip method for those. Or maybe get it scanned. Maybe something will be revealed.

Be patient. You will figure it out.

hey thanks for trying. I haven't gotten any codes. I wish I did, would have made it so much easier. I'm thinking to just order a new ecu or new chip. Any suggestions, or would it be best to just send it out for repair? I think the cost is almost the same either way.

The crazy thing is the car would run fine for hours sometimes and then suddenly it'll shut off and won't start back for a few mins-hours. Since they started happening I haven't driven it much so it's frustrating. I'd like to put her back on the road.

It is going to be cheaper getting the ECM repaired. They don't make new ones and some of the used ones have problems of their own. I had mine repaired by SIA Electronics in Illinois. At least mine was giving me some codes.

Also check connectors. Mine had corrosion on several pins, SIA does a great job.

Thank you everyone. I'm going to send it out to sia soon. Fingers crossed that does the job and there isn't anything else that I'm missing.
