Default Junkyard Vette Build Thread

Hey Everyone,

I figured I would just make one build thread instead of the multiple threads Ive had open.

So its for the car I bought a month or so ago which was close to heading to the junkard (and maybe should have) but I'm too far in!

Here are the old threads

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...nd-manual.html

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c4-tech-performance/3996725-is-my-tilt-worn-out-or-is-the-wheel-loose.html

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...-corvette.html

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c4-tech-performance/3990678-cranking-but-not-firing-1991-a.html

So far where I am is as follows:

  1. Car runs - issue was with butt connectors spliced into the coil wiring on the Distributor. Soldering and heat shrinking but the car does run now
  2. Ordered a refurb sawblade from Rock Auto to keep costs down. I was going to go with nearly any other wheel choice but decided to keep that money allocated elsewhere. Once wheel is totally trashed/cracked, etc.
  3. Ordered 275/40-17 Falken Azenis from TireRack as they were on sale. The new RT615k+ came out or whatever so the non (+) were only $120 each and new production
  4. Brakes - havent touched them but they stop the car in the driveway. I work for the company that owns HAWK Performance so I will probably just toss on our generic rotors and some Street5.0 or HPS pads.
  5. Steering Column (the nightmare). So I pulled it apart and it ended up being the bearings were shot. The tilt is ok but not great. I ended up finding a refurbished one through a Corvette shop so I pulled the trigger on that and ordered it. I can either rebuild or use mine as spare parts. I have VATS bypass (even thought I didnt need it) that I will use on the new column as its keyed and I do not want to pull apart another column now.

I've done that many times, also in bigger cars climbed into the trunk with my legs hanging out too. my wife usually laughs her butt off.

Just browsed your thread and you had a super ram in that thing when you bought it? wow, nice.

You may also have a bunch of other improvements in the system such as ported or newer heads and intake manifold. great score.

your car doesn't look that bad at all. look fwd to following your thread.

Thanks! and Yes on the Super Ram. that was the main reason I wanted this one over some other cars in the same shape. It looks like it has the runners but I cant tell on the lower manifold. I think it has the firing order cast into the lower near the rear which makes me thing its an OEM TPI lower intake.

It does look much nicer in photos than it is. The paint has the typical GM red clear coat failure. especially towards the rear of the car.

The rear bumper is very faded and the interior hasn't been treated nicely.

I hope to at least get an Autocross and a track in this season and DD the car to work when it isnt too hot. Unless I get the AC running... lol

from a suspension standpoint what are the first things I should target?

Right off the bat the front control arm bushing look awful

I guess while I'm in there I should just do ball joints and outer tire rods as well? How are the inners to change? Do the racks typically stay tight ok for awhile? The car has 100k on it.

nothing yet but I haven't pulled the valvecovers.

Defintly stock delco bilsteins on the car. I sprayed a ton of purple power all over everything

currently have a no start again but it's gotta be Vats

this column is a number 4 Vats and mine is a number 7 so I installed a bypass. Resistance in the module does match my old key though they are within 100ohms of each other

ugh

If you are looking for front a-arm bushings, go with the global west kit. So much better than the poly.

Thanks! Once I get this thing on the road for some shake down runs I will target what is worst first.

Control arm bushings look toasted though!

So here is the next mess I'm dealing with.

also, from pictures normally the cap plug is over towards the drivers side of the car. I wonder if that's why they felt compelled to splice in garbage and electrical tape.

any sources for a replacement clip/pigtail?

it looks like it will be tight so I will probably have to pull the distributor to fix this one properly which sucks

can I jump 12v to the coil to get it to fire? Previously I could wiggle these wires and it would run but not anymore.

I'll agree with you on this one. Since Bubba was clearly loose, my .02 is to do some "deconstructing" and DeBubba everything you can, and replace with fresh, correct wires.

Time consuming and expensive yes, but I think you will thank yourself
