Default Z51 shocks

I want to replace my shocks on my 85 with the Z51 package, do I have to use Z51 shocks or can I use non Z51
I'm looking at bilsteins, is there a difference in the ride between the Z51s and the non Z51s
Thanks for your help.

Supposedly with Bilsteins the z51 has more rebound and less compression. The idea is it takes more energy to compress the spring because of the high spring rate. More rebound to slow the return of the spring. The base shock is more neutral. The Z51 shock particular the front is designed for lower ride height. I don't know there is advantage to installing incorrect shocks.

There is a difference, but you can use either.

Having the Z51 package, I much prefer the Challenge Spec Bilsteins to stock, which in magazine reviews was great on smoother tracks, less so day-to-day street.

Does that mean that the base shock is a softer ride

I use this car as a daily driver, street only so I am looking for a more comfortable shock.

Your rear spring affects your ride quality much more than the shock choice, but yes the base shock is going to give a slightly softer ride.
