what year starter should I buy for gear drive starter to fit my 86

Why? Why wouldn't you just go down to NAPA and get a reman and be done with it for the next 10 years or so?

Get the 88-91 starter.

It may or may not require some shimming for perfection, and you may possibly have to lengthen the cable, but it works. I went with the later starter in my 86 when I added headers.

I did have to add a longer Positive cable on my 86'. The 88-91 starter fit perfectly with no shims and has been great even since (5+ years). I also installed the smaller starter when I installed headers.
