Does anyone know of a way to remove the entire heater core box in a 1990 without taking the AC charge down. I can't get to the 2 front screws of the blend door actuator on my 1990. I am considering a 94-95 heater box replacement if I can do it without taking the freon in the AC system down.
Any thoughts and suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

Not without putting stress on some of the lines and hoses when you go to pull the evaporator core case.
I have pulled the evaporator core case back a little bit to get to those screws...but in hind sight....I won't do it again like that. I used those ratchet wrenches....and it was NO FUN doing it. Taking it out is one thing...getting the screws back in...that is another.
I will have the Freon pulled out. Fighting with it so save the costs of going to an A/C shop does not make sense. The amount of hassle I am going through to save few bucks...just is not worth it. Or at least for me it is not worth it.

Your car is a 1990 correct?
From what I can tell there are only about four bolts holding the heater box in, correct? The two on the left side can be accessed through the section of the evaporator box which is removed to get to the rear spark plug. Are there 2 on the right side under the evaporator case too?
Actually it was on a 1985...but I do not think that this matters due to that area of the firewall basically remained unchanged.
I can verify this by tomorrow for you...but I think I am correct. There are two bolts hidden by the evaporator case. Or at least that is what is popping up in my mind when I try to remember it. And think they require a 10mm wrench/socket for them also.

ws OK it looks like there are 5 bolts or nuts holding it in, 2 on each side, on on bottom. All seem to be 10mm. I am splitting the evap casing and hopefully can get enough play to remove the 2 screws on the outboard side. Someone else on the forum said he did it this way. If I get a freon leak will have to fix that problem next.
Thanks,

The older I get the more I seem to forget. Sorry about the incorrect information provided.

No need to be sorry. I may have an advantage with my car which is a ZR1. There is a section of the inboard evap case which is removal making access to the two screws a bit easier.
