I am in the middle of replacing my timing set because of how much slack the chain has. The new Cloyes set I bought comes with a hardened water pump gear. How to I get the old gear and shaft out? I assume by knocking it out from the Intake valley? If so, how to remove the gear from the shaft? Please Help!!!
You need to pull the intake to access the mounting plate. Remove the 2 bolts, then tap the assembly out in to the valley. You have to press the gear off and on the shaft. It's not on crazy hard and is easy to do.
Just looked it up in my Corvette manual. You don’t need to remove the intake at all. Kenne Moore makes a tool specifically for removing this shaft assembly. I knew there had to be another way. I just ordered the tool. I might sell it once I’m done with my project. I have the part number and picture of the removal if anyone needs help!
Not wanting to sound dumb or anything but what kind of water pump has a gear attached to it?
What kind of engine is it?
Many years ago I had a 36' boat that I installed a Perkins Diesel in (to get rid of my gasoline 318) and it had a gear driven water pump on it but I have not seen a water pump gear on a car....yet.
I have two Corvettes a L-71 1968 Convertible and a L98,1988 coupe and neither has a water pump gear on them. Is the original Poster talking about the cam gear by chance? I have replaced a few timing chains in my day but never one with a gear for the water pump.
Thanks for enlightening me with this new information. Never too old to learn something new!
Have an awesome day out there fellow Corvette owners!

LT1 and LT4 has a cam driven water pump. It is not belt driven like all the others. The main cam gear drives a smaller gear that turns a shaft that sticks out of the cover.
Never thought to pull it out that way. Makes sense though since the plate holds the bearing in place, then the shaft is pressed into the bearing.
