Something like that? Then you can shorten your halfshafts?

Edit: I'm going to be following this closely, as I have a 383, 4L80E w/3200 stall, and the last thing I'm wanting to do right now is grenade my D36. I wanna run sticky tire but think its a terrible idea until I get something else under there.

The 8.8 inner axle stubs use a design/bolt pattern that can't really be adapted for a 1350 U-joint. If it can't be done cheaper than someone can pick up a good Dana 44, then its isn't nearly as beneficial.

I'll post back if I ever figure out the axle situation. My Dana 36 is making a fair bit of noise and the new engine/setup is going to twist it in knots.

Ever since I first read this thread I've been very interested in the idea.

What does Ford do for axleshafts? Could they be adapted?

While looking for that info, which the cobra IRS appears to be a double wishbone type, I found this article about how the early Mustangs almost had IRS from the beginning. They used Jaguar Dana 44s. http://www.mustangandfords.com/featu...arly-mustangs/

I wonder if a machine shop could take your stub shafts a cut a groove to accept a c clip? The diffs in all solid axle 8.8s have c clip axles.

I thought I read somewhere that c-clip axles weren't legal for some forms of racing. Now that might just be for straight axles, and Ford can get away with it because it isn't a structural component, but it might be an issue for us.

C clips axles aren't popular because axle is can pop out if clip or axle fails. Most sanctioning bodies want the rear hub retained so wheel / tire should not leave vehicle. Ford doesn't use a" swing axle" rear suspension. The half shafts are trapped between diff and knuckle. Either a strut or control arm holds top of knuckle in place.

Has anyone ever seen a U joint or half shaft break in a C4 at speed? Is it a total disaster or is it still possible to retain control?

I might be able to continue forward on this.
Turns out, someone I know has a CNC Plasma in his garage. Getting all of the mounting brackets made would now be a breeze. I can have them cut, placed in a jig, and welded up in about an hours time.

Axles are still the issue, but having C-clip grooves machined into the 8.8 axle should be fairly simple. A good friend of mine runs a machine shop. I will still have the issue of getting the inner axle stub for the 8.8 adapted to the C4 axle shaft. Maybe I can use the CNC plasma to create an adapter plate.

The D36 I have is well on its way out. It pops and clicks loud enough to hear while rolling. At some point, this is going to become a priority for me.

I think I've seen this in the Vette Hack Facebook group.
Have you opened it up and checked the bearings?

This is an option if you can find a dana 44 diff. All my years of lurking around and I just find out about this adaptor, and you can make yourself.
