What's an optispark and where is it located?

It is located on the front of the engine below the water pump.. Trace your spark plug wires to it. I don't think your 89 has one.

Opti Spark began with LT1 engine. Its locate in front of the engine below the water pump.
We have L98 engine, conventional distributor. Locate at the rear of the engine:)

The Optispark (or as many of us that have them call it the Opticrap) is GM 's answer to what historically has been called a distributer. It was first introduced in the 1992 LT-1 motor and ran through the 1996 model. The Optispark is located on the front of the engine, below the waterpump, and slightly behind the crank pully.

Seeing that you have an '89 and the other member has a '90, you are fortunate enough not to have one of these.
