I've got a 350 LT1 I've been doing a 24x conversion on this weekend in my 4thgen Z.
Ported heads, gm847 cam, 987 springs @ 1.8", 1.6 pro mags, stock bottom end, stock valves, long tubes and duals. Just finished installing a 9" in the car, 3.55 gears and posi, has an m6.
Seems to run fine, however, with the 847 cam I think I might be better off dacamming the engine considering the stock valves and 987 springs. Ive been considering the cc503...not as hot as the 847 but should work better in the long run in that 350. Had one many years back and I was happy with it for what it is.
Engine has under 1k miles on it. I'm thinking if I decam it, it might make a good option for my 95 Vette when the time comes...125k and the hot idle oil pressure is getting low.
350 LT1 in question will eventually be replaced with a 440 based on the Motown LS with an LS7 top end, set up for the street (hence the 3.55 gears).
It is your call. The 847 will be fairly aggressive in a 350 but your preferences will determine if it is ok. The 503 will be tamer but I think it valve lift is on the low side. You could look for a cam with similar duration numbers but more lift.
I don't necessarily want to go with more lift, I'm limited to .600 lift with the current springs installed anyway.
I gave it more thought today and I think I'll be pulling out the 847 and putting in a 503. I have a 305 but it's not the direction I want to go. I had one years ago and it drove great for it's size, without a huge drivability or mileage decrease. It'll also play nice with those springs and lifters for the time being.
I've got the 503 in a 383. That's a solid cam. It'll sound wild in a 350. Its a little lite for a 383. I get about 10 inches of vacuum at 800 rpms though. It is aggressive on the profile. Hard ramping.
Might it be easier to change out the 1.6 ratio for 1.5 ratio rockers? Duration stay's the same; valve lift reduced with corresponding reduction of stress on the valve springs and related valve train.
