Hi, I am planning on upgrading the exhaust on my 1985 corvette soon and am getting the kbd targa mufflers. I was wondering if there is a difference between the 2 1/2” mufflers or 3” or if it is just the tips? If it is just the tip I would get the 2 1/2”. I am getting a 3” true dual exhaust all the way back to these mufflers with a crossover.
From what i have seen both sizes in tips just change the tip and the inlet is 2 1/4” on both of them. I thought the exhaust shop would be able to use a reducer to change it to this size right before the mufflers. Or am I wrong and this would hurt the performance? If it would hurt performance I would just have to find some different mufflers but I really liked the looks of them and people said they make it sound like a 70’s muscle car plus it is like a straight pipe but it’s really a glass packed muffler inside.
The inlet may be 2 1/2”. Would this be big enough to not hurt the performance of a 3” true dual?
Theoretically yes, but in practice not really.
You don't say much about (any) performance mods to your car, so 2.5 will be plenty. Plus, you will only feel a difference (if any) at the far upper RPM bands.
For everyday cruising, 2.5 will be a clean install, sound great and give you a bit of a kick. Remember to get rid of your cat and put in a hi-flow catalytic. THAT will make a difference.

Vader86 told me how to get up to 300 hp from the engine with 3” true dual, long tube headers which I will get later. Then port the plenum and runners and a new intake manifold. That’s why I want to get 3 inch true dual and was wondering if it would hurt the performance at all if the muffler inlets are only 2 1/2”?
