Default Rack & pinion

I have to send my unit out for rebuild. They ask what code is on the dust cover. Just what is the dust cover and what does it look like?

Opposite the intermediate shaft connection to the steering rack is a 'round end cap' and on that end cap there's generally a 2 letter code. That generally identifies steering ratio.

You didn't mention the year or the 'VENDOR' but I'd be somewhat selective regarding rebuilding services. Junior from 'Turn ONE' posts here regularly and I don't know any personal friends that have ever been disappointed. You do want to be sure you understand the ratio as well as the 'LETTER CODE' of yours. It wouldn't be unusual for a less than 'reliable' vendor to do a swap and not return the sometimes more preferred QUICKER/Z51 optioned rack.

It seems that the actual snapshots that had been posted through the years went away with the 'PhotoBucket' deal so I couldn't supply you with an actual snapshot. I've a steering rack in the box but didn't have time to do snapshots.

My problem is that I have an 89. When I went to rebuild the front suspension I found that somebody had spliced a different front clip on it. I know it's not an 89 because the mounts on the lower control arm for the sway bar are different. Also I found the code on the rack it's SD so I have no idea where it came from

So your assumption I'm guessing is that the car was repaired with '87 and earlier side rails, cross-member and suspension. Correct?

Yes, that's what I think was done.
