I have been reading a lot of posts about aftermarket intakes, and I am thinking of replacing my TPI this winter, my question is will replacing just an intake make a big difference in hp and torque?? Thanks for any info :seeya
From everything that I've read it is kinda like a catch 22. If you open up your exhaust you will see some increase but no where near your total potential. If you open up just your intake you will see increase, but again not near the total potential. You have to do both to get the air flow in and then out. And then you still will not be at optimum because your heads will not be able to keep up with the openned up intake and exhaust.
So what I am trying to say is that you have to decide what you want to do first, or drop alot of money at one time. IMO I would open up the exaust first, especially on a TPI car.
if you replace the TPI intake on a stock vette, you'll gain hp above 4400rpm (where TPI plummets), but you'll lose torque down low (where the tuned part of TPI comes to play). you'll flatten the torque curve out and move peak torque up in the rpm band.
to take advantage of the better high rpm breathing, you'll want a larger cam. to take advantage of the cam, you'll need better heads. to make use of the better breathing of the intake, cam, and heads, you'll need to upgrade the exhaust.
if you don't match all these parts together, you won't get optimum performance.
