I agree that the reman units from Cardone are junk. I replaced about 4 in a row, each one lasted less than one weekend of autocross, all failed internal, diaphragm either ruptured or came un-glued. All were replaced free (part) and last one I got a refund. Ended up at the junkyard getting one off another 96 that appeared original, and it is still on the car now, 2 years later, and going strong. My car is a 96 as well.
I now have a spare original unit, also from parted out car, I'm keeping it, cause I know I'll need it someday.

Rock Auto offers a service that sends the units to Prior Industries in Texas to be rebuilt. Not Cardone. This might be worth looking into. Notice the line items that say Prior.

Prior can also be contacted directly to see if they can be dealt with without the middle man

DR. Cook , thanks for the info. one parts source states that 2 co's supply reman boosters ,Girling and ATE. I am not sure this is true. ZIP Vette parts lists a steel, reman early c4 booster but they are on B/O . Called them and was told " we ordered 8 units for Nov 1 delivery, received 1. they are checking for delivery and will call me back. since I don't have a steel core ,cant send anything out to rebuild . if you were ever in a reman plant , you would be astounded that any part would ever work out of the box. I had a few reman customers (after market & OEM), conditions inside the plants are like the description from a Charles Dickens novel , Many times Bosch would ship new units in reman boxes due to the fact that new cost less to build.

Allright, I apologize. Sorry.
I found it hard to believe. Really hard to believe but I see others have had similar experiences.
There is a boneyard close to me, im sure they will have used oem (metal) boosters and if you would like one i will gladly send it to you.....
Sorry for being a di(k and thnx for setting me straight.

the same shop will be installing a 3rd booster. the conversation will be short: fix it and change the master cylinder also this time, and repair the cruise control that the " mechanic" in Durango broke while installing the 4th booster. I have told mechanics what part to use for 40 years, hard habit to break.

MR Viking, Thanks, was not a problem. Dino's used Vette parts is only about 50 miles from me, but that will be a last resort. thank you for the generous offer.

a little good news
spoke to the shop I use and they will install the steel unit. was told " John we had 2 c4's (one is mine) that we put 6 plastic boosters on. they all failed. We could never find a metal unit to use. you supply the metal unit and we will put in.". that means i'll be stuck like chuck if the unit I supply craps out . this shop has replaced 2 units at no cost, so I can't complain. ( the first unit failed in 3 miles ) FYI : One of my bills from them states booster cracked at base. that one might due to too much mighty tight

I guess I should consider myself lucky. Replaced the original plastic booster on my '89 with a plastic replacement (GM part) in 1996. Has worked great for the 22 years since then.

I know it's a dirty word most place but have you checked auto zone to see if they have one. especially with a life time warranty. I've used their life time parts and if they fail, they replace them no questions asked. good luck.

Mine (85) split right up the back.. About a 1/4" gap.
I got a metal one from Autozone and it has worked beautifully. It was listed right there with the Cardone reman plastic units.
Forget what I paid for it, but it wasn't a lot.
I dunno what the "reman" process entails exactly? But reusing decades old plastic sounds like a sketchy proposal from the get go.
Good luck!!!

That crack was happening to me 2x in 1 year, I was pissed but i found as I was replacing with a cardone plastic units was that my brake vacuum line was putting
much tension on the valve. There can be no tension to the side. I believe that was causing the vrack for no reason. Since I have a metal one with no problems but pep boys does not seem to carry them anymore.
That is wrong!
Ok I guess this would be a goto steel booster now. Good Luck
