Did you read the thread started by BluesQQ about his headlight problem? Your '86 probably has a stripped gear. Here's the same procedure to help you solve your problem:

2022 C4 of the Year Finalist - Modified
Just rebuilt both my headlights. Was easy to do, just get the Delrin bushings, gear is usually fine. Driver side easy - pass side slightly difficult to get gear out but was still easy...
PS- DONT loosen motor itself per some online videos - no need to. Like i said driver side easy, pass side the gear is held back by a step in the gear. If you tap on gear housing while holding the shaft, the metal worm gear will cut into the step in gear, and it will fall out. Wont hurt anything, just line up same way you took out to clear worm gear, or take a xacto knife and completely remove step (not necessary though). Take alot of pics.
I needed split bushings as well ($35 rip off but whatever), and the Delrin bushings. I cleaned everything and painted all of it - full rebuild. Total time for the whole job was about a day....Good luck!
