Hey all, My 84 has been doing this for quite a while. The headlights make an awful grinding noise when opening and closing. They seem to work just fine but the noise is unsettling. I haven't torn into them yet but was wondering if anyone else has had this problem.
Thanks!!!!
Could very well be your bushings are going bad. ALOT of people have posted about this problem during the last couple of months. I just replaced my bushings (about $4 a set) and all is well again with my headlights. I also transplanted the plastic gear in each headlight motor with the bronze gears available via Eckler's, Mid-America, etc.
There are three bushings in each headlight motor, and they will breakdown over time. When I pulled mine apart the other day, the bushings fell out like ground soap dust when I popped the cover off of the motor casing.
Replacing them will take about three hours per headlight. There is an outline in the Tech Tips section of this website that will walk you though the process. Having the proper tools will really help make the process a breeze.
