Default cable backdriver pin

I am working on the 1985 Corvette. I replaced the ignition switch. I noticed the cable backdriver pin was just hanging loosely. What does it do? Do I need it? And where does it connect to. I see it connects to a cable. But where does the detent go into.

Thank you

Is this an A4 or a 4+3 car? Park-lock cable goes to transmission shifter. Theoretically if all is correct, A4 needs to be in PARK and a 4+3 in REVERSE to turn key to lock.

Thank you fro the help

I can see that it goes to the transmission. Where or how does it connect to the steering wheel column. Does it have to be installed so I can shift into reverse. I can't see where it connects. And the FSM is not a big help.
I also looking for the wire that connects to my oil temperature sensor.

thank you

See 7B-7 in the FSM

I guess you either get it or you don't. -

thank you for the direction. I will look at the FSM

I am kind of at a loss for understanding this "I guess you either get it or you don't."

If you only have the rod & clip that extends up the column from the bracket at the ignition switch that attaches to the 'backdrive' pin you would need to remove the support that holds the column up in the car to get access to the column shroud. If the car runs and drives maybe you don't worry about it. Does the car run and drive?

Thank you for getting back to me. I do not have hours of search time on this car. It is in a garage and I pay hourly to work on it. If I were home in NJ in my own garage with free access. I would be less helpless.

The car does run. I have to find out why the alternator readout says 11.4 volts but the alternator checks out, at NAPA.
The connect the MAT sensor, the crankcase ventilation and install the seats. Then I will see if it can shift without the cable backdriver pin.
I see the pin has a dent in it I am assuming that I have to remove the collar to reinstall the pin.

I will not get to work on the car until Thursday eve your time.

Thanks again
