Is the connector on the positive terminal in the attached image a stock component or something added? I can figure out what it is for and it seems to put the positive very close to the fender well.
Yes it is a battery disconnect. It is very handy if your car sits for long periods of time or if you are working on the electrical system. However, for safety it should be used on the negative (ground) side of the battery.
That is a battery disconnect all right but it belongs on the "Ground" side of the battery not on the "Hot" side. They are fairly useful until it breaks one day when turning the **** on it. I have given up on them as most are brittle junk.
If you are going to continue to use it then please put it on the battery ground side so it won't short out the battery on something.
Thanks for the advise. I will probably remove it since I am doing a trickle charger.
I have one like in your picture on my 91. Installed it when I was having an issue with a parasitic loss. Found loss, but have kept it on although I believe it is recommended to put on neg post. Regardless, it works great and ideal if you store your car for long periods of time. In your picture it shows that the turn screw is loosened to not allow connection.
I had one like that on my 86 right up till the day I was driving down the highway and it decided to snap in two. I've since replaced it with a cutoff I got from Summit that has proven to work well. Found a mounting point already threaded so made a mounting plate and had some cables made up at a boating supply house and it's all good.
