Default Bose radio has low volume

Radio was working great when drove in the garage last week, shut car off and covered it up and today when I backed it out of the garage I couldn't get but a really low volume from the radio. Any suggestions or has it just gone bad and needs to be replaced?

What year car?

I would remove a rear speaker and make sure it is getting 12 volts on the power (orange) wire. Possible CDM problem, probably not the radio head.
Can't get to specific without knowing the year.

Sorry didn't post follow-up info but had family medical problem so car was not a priority. Thanks for the info, car is a 90 C4 convertible. I will check out the CDM recommendation but probably will just sell the car, don't feel like messing around with it. These cars seem to have a multitude of problems associated with them. I think I will just stick to the 60's muscle cars, so simple they are.

You are going to sell a 1990 C4 Corvette Convertible because the Radio doesn't work properly?

I have a pair of Corvettes, a 1968 427, 4 speed, convertible and my 1988 C4 Corvette Coupe and I love them both. The C4 is my preferred car to have to work on. I have a "go fast" car with my 1968 C3 and I have a "Sunday go to meeting" car in my C4 Corvette. The C4 Corvette is one of my favorite models and they are very special cars.

The C4 was a revolutionary car when it came out, I remember the day I first saw a C4, wow, what a Corvette! It may be easier to work on the 1968 as you can reach all eight plugs from the top and everything is within reach. The 1988 is the better more reliable car though, it is a great design and came with a okay engine. I still get a thrill driving my C4 down a road full of curves at speed, it is a great car and gets looks everywhere it goes. The fuel system is a bit crude but works well if maintained and I get 30 mpg while driving my C4. I got rid of my Cadillac STS because it did not handle as well and only got 12 mpg no matter where you drove it. The Stereo in the Cadillac was superior but that is not why I drive a car. The Bose stereo in these cars was pretty amazing for its day, people were raving about the stereo when the car came out.

Take your Corvette to a Best Buy and have them install a new stereo if you need one. They can install a new touch screen type radio if you so choose. They will uninstall it and re-install the old radio if you wanted to when selling the car.

Me, I go out and buy an exhaust system so the engine sounds can keep me happy. I still have my AM/FM in my 1968 and it still doesn't work. In a convertible it is a bit hard to hear the stereo anyway. All I hear is the beautiful sound of eight angry cylinders swinging around on the crankshaft making more horsepower than I will ever need. The only problem I have with my 1968 C3 is that nobody knows carburetors around here anymore. If you find someone they charge a premium to work on outdated technology. I have a Snap On Scanner and have no problems with my C4's engine and drive line.

When you get ready to sell your C4 try posting it on our Corvette Forum's "Corvettes For Sale" section. It reaches people who like Corvettes and know them!

Best regards,
Chris

I'd fill up the profile so people can look at it and see what you are.

It's too late for a PDI since you already took delivery but a through inspection will tell you exactly what is needed so you make a better decision. This is exactly why I always do one for any car that isn't a beater and I am ready to pull over by the roadside, pull the plates and walk away. At least, you know what it takes to get it to where you are able to work on it or know how much it takes to get it where you want it.

Another good option for those who are unable to accept new tech.

Why? Sell it to some kid who will have more imagination than brains. If we know it has a lot of problems, we might not be willing to pay top dollar. Some idiot kid will think he gets a bargain and take the POS off your hands for more money.

Hello aklim,

Why sell it to somebody who really knows and understands these cars when you can dump it on some unsuspecting kid?

If it is close to original I would rather see someone who would appreciate the C4 for what it. Some people actually like the design and style of the C4's over newer Corvettes

You sell it to some kid and he thinks it is a daily driver then he complains and hates Corvettes for life, it is a millennial...

or else

He Comes to the Corvette Forum and wants to know how to make 800 rwHP out of an older seasoned Corvette that was lucky to make three hundred horsepower in its prime...

Faster and easier to sell it to someone who isn't asking questions because he doesn't know better and is too arrogant to get a PDI than to sell it to someone who will want to put it on a hoist and drop the trans pan, check compression and make sure everything functions like it should. Possibly he may be more impressed and pay more money.

I fully endorse your testing and asking any questions which I will answer to the best of my knowledge HONESTLY before you buy it BUT once money changes hands, it's all over and I do a "Pontius Pilate" on you.

Some of the Bose systems have a speed-variable setting on the volume **** where the volume is quieter at slow speeds and louder at higher speeds. May be stretching here but worth a look.

If so, he should be able to turn it up when the engine is off but if all he gets is a soft sound, maybe something is broke and not the settings or at least, that is what I am thinking.

I have had the damn car for over a year and enjoy driving it. I am 71 years old and it is not as easy to do the work on the cars anymore as when younger, and the Corvette is especially hard to do work on it if it happens to involve something in the interior of the car, especially under the dash. I have owned over 75 cars in my lifetime and the majority of them have been Mopars and I know them quite well. I bought the Corvette convertible because it looked like it might be a fun car and it has been, but it is a pain to get in and out for me compared to my Dodge Challenger. The car is a good car, it just seems that the more I read about the C4s is that electrical problems seem to pop up more often than not and I don't care to deal with them.

To the guy that said I would probably sell it to some kid to unload it, you have no idea what you are talking about. Give me a break!!!! I personally don't know too many kids around the area I live that can can come up to me and pay cash for my Corvette!!!! Besides that, most kids I know wouldn't even be interested in a 1990 vintage Corvette as it doesn't have all the modern day electronic goodies they want now. The majority of kids want to drive a small little box that is decked out with electronics so they can bluetooth their phone to it and keep going with their social life!!!

Most people that have responded I thank very much for your comments, but a couple of people sure don't represent the Corvette owners that I have run across and I hope you are in the minority!!!
As I stated, I will probably sell this and last I knew it was a free country and if I decide I want to sell the car, it shouldn't be a problem. As I stated earlier it is kind of a bitch to get in and out of, but it is a fun car to drive and I have enjoyed it!!!

Check amp fuse and relay. Amps are made to speakers, speaker(s) may pop as amps fail. A failed in 1 speaker can effect the others. There will be little volume if the amps aren't getting 12v; even at max volume on dash unit. You need a service information whether FSM or Bose radio diagnostic manual.

I did say you should sell it to some kid who would be less picky as opposed to someone who knows what they are looking for. I didn't say what you would do.

As to having a means of payment, that is important. That said, there are many people who DO have the means to pay. It DOES NOT matter that they are in your area. The internet has seen to that. Look at all the crap on eBay.

While the majority of people, myself included, prefer newer, a good salesman creates the desire if it isn't there or stokes it if it is present,if possible. Besides, if you reach out on the internet, someone will bite.

Wasn't it YOU who brought up the idea of selling? I merely suggested the target audience for a car with a problem. Sorry you didn't like it. I'll take it back. Find a connoisseur who is both knowledgeable and shrewd and argue price with him/her.

Yes, you can sell it if you want to or keep it. Doesn't affect my bottom line either way.

I wonder if it is in my FSM. Never checked it out since I tossed the Bose. I'd be curious to see tonight when I dig out my FSM.

I don't know what you are talking about for the Bose Radio Diagnostic Manual. Is that some other part of the FSM?
