One concern is that 1st gear is going to be nearly useless. I can bump up the shift point some but still.. 2-3 is if I understand going to in a way be closer together which is desperately needed. Again I can pump up the shift point at 1/2 throttle on up.. 3rd should be killer no matter what gear and 4th is an issue only on a road trip. Which up to now I dont do.. I more or less go out for an hour or two drive now and then on a sunny day.
Would be fun to get next to a modern camaro with like a 3.73... just to see what could be done
All of the mods Id like to do are not engine.. Id REALLY love to use some sonax parts on my 4l60e.. I REALLY want to do their HD 2-3 valve.. Im a road racer (or used to be anyway) and I hate that in D there is no engine braking.. it makes it VERY difficult to navigate a corner using the throttle for controlling. Essentially throttle steering. As soon as you lift the damn thing goes free wheeling and you have to wait for the TC to spool up again.. its in a way quite dangerous actually. It would be easy for an inexperienced soul to add too much throttle and be surprised when the TC hooks back up.
This is why I drive manuals.
There are ways to tune the TC lock up and Fuel Cut. There are options out there to get some custom tuning done. That may increase your enjoyment of the car without changing much else.

If researched this extensively and there is no way to program the overrun clutch or the tc to engine brake. Its a mechanical function. Ive tried to program it myself for hours and hours.
Im somewhat handicapped in my right arm due to a 2015 harley accident. I can shift but the pain makes it no fun.
Interesting. It has been since 1996 since I drove a 4L60E car. Seriously, The only LT1/LT4s I have owned or got wheel time with have been 6-speeds. Hell even my new Jeep Wrangler is a 6-speed.
I just like having control. I have no gripes over the newer autos. I had a Scat Pack 392 Challenger with an 8-speed auto and TBH, with 8 gears it always seemed to be able to be in the right gear. Just had a brief second waiting on the down shift that I didn't like. I know they shift faster and if I was going drag racing I would use an auto, but for daily driving...as long as I can I will prefer a manual.
I've kinda decided to just have this done to mine. Going to see what a shop would charge nuts to bolts to just take my car and make it happen. Im guessing $2500. NOTHING is cheap anymore.

Looking at Jegs the Ring/Pinion set should run about $360 and the installation kit is around $190. That's only $550 in parts, plus some gear oil so I think you are only in it around $600. How much labor are they charging you. I would think this is no more than a 1day job at worse. So you figure that at most should run you $800 in labor. I would think you should be in with taxes and all below $1600. Going from 2.59 to a 3.54 is a 36.68% increase in gear multiplication - torque increase. Hard to "bolt" that on anywhere else (not including the torque converter affect). There is no doubt you will feel the change.

I dont know yet.. waiting for first quote.. Im talking complete job installing in the car. I really should try and do this myself.. It would be painful with my arm but if I took it slow over a week or two I could do it then hand the diff to a good shop.
I agree.. I think anyone with an economy gear wanting a bump should do this first. Without actually experiencing the result Im betting there are very few streetable engine upgrades that could produce the same impact on performance. Unfortunately I expect (if I should ever sell) zero recoup from this.. so as a corvette used parts supplier told me over the phone yesterday "youd have to do this for you".. He said he'd expect a Dana 36 rebuild to be $1200 by the way. For that Id be tempted to order up the Zip HD Dana 36 for a $500 more. He also suggested I just get a 3.07, that the upgrade would be huge and $500. I think Id kick myself.
If I did it myself, once up on stands I could also drop the trans pan and do the engine brake mod at the same time while I wait for the diff rebuild. I wish I had someone that was worth calling a friend to help out.. rare to find these days.
By the way, a few years back I bought a set of aluminum jack stands.. I think ACDelco brand from O'Reilly's.. Im not sure Id trust them.. kinda scary. I live alone and I dont want to go out screaming in my closed-up garage. Someone would need to jack the car up off me to retrieve the rancid body.. Id hate to do that to someone. Also don't want to be remember as the stupid old man who got crushed under his ugly old school corvette. hahaha
I run 3.73's with a 700R4 and it's not horrible on the highway. I also have a good manual driveshaft with an auto yoke on it if interested. Has new U-joints too.
My 89 had the same. My 96 Viper six speed had 3:73's . Loved it.
So I just found a Dana 44 and he says its a 3.54 based on turning the yoke. It is the complete suspension and I dont have a truck. $650 is a hell of a deal but he is 3 hrs away. How hard would i be for me to tear off the suspension to put in my trunk of my 2017 bmw? lol..
What tools would I need. I do have a dewalt impact which would help out..
Says he bought it yrs ago for a project and never did it.. told me other things which I wont consider as factual because I dont believe anyone these days.
he wont help me.. although he said he would load it for me.. I could probably rent a truck and push it out when I got home onto the dirt. lol

Its probably a 3.45 and at $600 I really hope you buy it. Its is worth the drive.
the problem is is that you dont know what you're getting. Im considering it though.. he wont open the cover and take a photo.. but I think I will ask if I can when I get there.. I think the answer will be know because he wants to sell the thing as a suspension package and doesnt want it apart.
I was chatting online when I was told Id need to ship mine first. I even told him I have no crate or shipping container of any sort.. sounds like whomever is manning the chat line on the website needs some training.
Is the entire assy $650.00 ? If so, do you have a hitch on your vehicle, or know someone that did, then you could rent a trailer from U-haul. If you kick it out of the back of a truck, you might damage it if it lands wrong. Then you could take it apart at your leisure. Or rent a truck from U-haul and a small trailer.

Yeah entire thing and he will load it.
No hitch on car and I dont like borrowing things.. especially things I can break.
He has a front end loader so loading is no problem. Im still brain storming.. One thought is, if I rent a uhaul which can be beat up a little, I could talke it apart when I get home right on the truck if I haul butt.
