Going to be tight on 17 x 9.5 wheels. Will definitely work on 17 x 11

There are a few very knowledgeable guys here that know all about track events, one that comes to mind is Matthewmiller(CF ID/name). With the 285 width you are going to be limited, the popular one in that size is Continental extreme contact. If you go 275, there are a ton of choices. Check out tirerack and Discount tire direct

Definitely do not go with 315s on a 9.5" wheel. You can, however, fit 17x11 wheels with 50mm offset and 315/35/17 tires at all four corners if you're willing to buy new wheels. Or 18x11 and 315/30/18 tires. But assuming you want to reuse your stock 17x9.5 wheels...

...then yeah, this ^^^. I recommend 275/40/17. You can match them with 245/45/17 tires for the 17x8.5 front wheels. If you absolutely insist on staying with the 255 front and 285 rear sizes, then the best choice by a country mile is the Continental ExtremeContact Sport. It's a great tire in the dry or wet, and in any temp above freezing. It works well on the street and is surprisingly fast on a track or autocross course.
